Nature Neuroscience: MIF Nuclease Drives Direct Neuronal Death in MS via Parthanatos
A study published in Nature Neuroscience demonstrates that in the EAE model of MS, neurons die via parthanatos — a cell death pathway mediated by MIF nuclease activity. Blocking MIF nuclease genetically or pharmacologically reduced neuron loss and disease severity. Current MS drugs do not address this neurodegeneration mechanism.
JFInnova Perspective
This is perhaps the most important finding validating our target. It demonstrates that MIF directly causes neuronal death in MS — not just inflammation. Current drugs target peripheral immunity and leave neurodegeneration untreated. JFIN-0001, a BBB-penetrant nanobody blocking the MIF/CD74 axis, addresses exactly this unmet medical need.
